My Hypothetical Family Situation

My family consists of a single mother with two children.  The family is African American, and come from a low-socioeconomic background.  The mother works two jobs and provides for both children.  One of the mother's job is a full time day job and a part-time job in the evenings.  During the evenings, the grandmother watches the children.  One child is in Kindergarten, and the oldest child is in the second grade.  As a result, a K-12 program would be beneficial to the family.  My goal is to provide a system that addresses the needs of this family.

Please provide some feedback or suggestions on ways to help this family.

  1. How will you build in the Health component of a comprehensive early childhood system? Are you planning to address early childhood care and education in some way or are you going to focus on the public education system? I think in the directions we were asked to address diverse abilities. How do you plan to do that? I look forward to reading the next stage of your paper next week.

  2. Are the children currently suffering from any health related issues? Birth defects? Maybe the family could be malnourished or have problems within their home environment that causes health problems such as a roach infestation. I often visit homes with a high level of infestation and the families are usually always sick. That may be something worth considering.

  3. Elnora,
Will your comprehensive system address support for single parent families? There seems to be so many single parent working two jobs therefore that leaves less time to spend with children. Maybe this could have an impact on learning and development. Looking forward to the your next step.
